On-Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

There are many people who are just starting out in blogging and many people who have been running their own sites for a while, not knowing what SEO is and how to implement it!

SEO simply means search engine optimization.  This is where you create your web pages and implement certain techniques to help you rank as high as possible in search engine results pages (SERPs).  The higher your pages rank on Bing/Google/Yahoo/etc.  The more results pages your site is likely to get.

Now, SEO can be divided into two separate categories;  On Page SEO & Off Page SEO.

On-page SEO refers to all the things you can do ON your web site to help you rank higher, like page titles, internal linking, meta tags and description, etc.

Off-page SEO refers to all the things you can do directly outside OFF your website to help you rank higher, such as social networking, submitting articles, marketing in forums and blogs, etc.

In today’s article, we will take a special look at on-page SEO and some of the most effective ways to increase your page rankings on search engines.

  On-page Search Engine Optimization

1. Page titles

Your page titles are one of the most important search engine optimization (SEO) factors on your site.  Each of your pages and posts should have its own unique title, which includes that page’s main keywords.

For example, you could write a blog post about a new chocolate cake recipe you tried.  So it is very important that you include “chocolate cake recipe” in the title of the post, perhaps “easy chocolate cake recipe” or “chocolate cake recipe for kids”, etc.

This way, the more someone searches for chocolate cake recipes in a search engine, your post has a better chance of appearing because you have included those keywords.

  2. Meta descriptions

More people forget to include meta description for the page.  These descriptions are an important place to include relevant keywords for your content, as they are used in results search when your page is listed.

For example, if we continue with the example “chocolate cake recipe”, a good meta description for this page will include related keywords and words.  So, “This easy recipe for chocolate cake is probably the most delicious mouth-watering chocolate cake ever.”  It would be a great meta description to use, as it is relatively short, with a number of specific keywords.

  3. Meta tags

For each of your page, you can include a set of keywords in the form of meta tags.  These should be all keywords related to your content, which you will have searched for previously.

I use a WordPress plugin on my sites called “All In One SEO Pack“.  This allows me to enter all of my keywords, meta description and page title at the bottom of each of my posts before publishing.  This simply inserts all the information into the HTML of your page, making your life a little easier.

  4. URL structure:

It is highly recommended to include SEO friendly URLs for each of your pages, as it brings better crawling.  Shorter URLs seem to perform better in search engine results, but that’s not the only factor.

URLs with targeted keywords also perform better.  The location of these keywords can also have a huge impact.  For example, site.com/keyword will perform better than https://www.site.com/ etc.

As you can see on this page, the URL is SEO Content Connection site I have included keywords related to this post.

  5. Body Marks (H1, H2, H3, H4, etc.):

When writing your articles, your content should be divided into smaller sections and paragraphs to make it easier for people to read.  These sections can be given a title, where H1, H2, H3, H4, etc. are used.

Generally, H1 tags are reserved for your homepage title, with subsequent titles (just like the ones I used in this post) released H2, H3, etc.  These search engines are used to determine what is important within your content.  This is why keyword-rich headlines are more useful than generic headlines.

‏  ‏Make sure to write keyword-rich titles in order of priority in the title tags H1, H2, and H3.  They are used by more crawlers to differentiate important content.

  6. Keyword Density:

Including relevant keywords in your content is very important, as it helps search engines identify the topic of your content.  However, try not to over-repeat or overuse keywords just for search engine bots.  This can lead to your website being banned from search engines.

To avoid this, try to keep your keyword density to around 2-5%.  If you find this difficult, get out of the thesaurus and expand your writing vocabulary.  This way, you can still write about the same thing, without the risk of getting banned.

  7. Image SEO

Using pictures within your content is a great way to make your site more visually appealing and break up boring bits of text.  You can make use of these pictures to help improve the SEO of your site.

All of your uploaded pictures have titles, so treat them just like your page titles.  Including relevant keywords can help people find your website when they search on Google Images.

You can also include alt text and descriptions for your pictures, making them more useful with SEO.

  8.  Internal Linking

People often think that the only links that are important are those from other websites.  While these links are important, they are not the only important ones!

Putting links to other website pages is a great way to improve your site and use it properly, and internal links can be a useful weapon in your search engine optimization (SEO) arsenal.  It not only makes it easier for your visitors to navigate around your site and find your content, but it also ensures that your site is crawled properly allowing search engines to find all of your pages.  It also helps build page relevancy with relevant keywords and phrases, while also helping to increase Google PageRank for your pages.

There are a number of different methods you can use to improve your internal link structure.  The main object is content links and permalinks.

For blogger content links are very useful when used properly.  These are the links that are placed inside your article posts, which redirect people to other relevant pages on your website.

‏ For example, this post focuses on increasing traffic to your website, so readers may also find a helpful post on How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog’.’  Perhaps other people are just starting to blog and want to know more.

  Summary:

These eight techniques are just some of the ways you can improve on-page SEO.  Using them independently of others won’t make a huge difference to your site’s ranking, but when used together, they can help improve your website traffic.

They will help make your pages perform better, they will help your entire site to be crawled by search engine spiders, they will help increase the value of internal pages and they will build the relevance of internal pages with specific keyword phrases.

Therefore, it pays to take the time to implement them to improve your site!
